Greetings
2010 has been an interesting year. While it certainly was not easy, it
wasn't as difficult as many doomsday prophets predicted it would be
either. In South Africa, the combination of the World Cup and the
aftermath of the 2009 recession caused many entrepreneurs to alternate
between caution and recklessness this year. Entrepreneurs whose
enterprises lacked sustainability and effective governance procedures
may have found the economic climate particularly challenging. Others
may have overspent based on what opportunities they thought the World
Cup would bring, without having concrete strategies or accountability
in place.
As 2010 draws to a close, how many of you are already prepared for next
year, and how many of you are scrambling to get everything done before
year-end? We tend to delay the process of preparing for the following
year, and the longer we delay it, the more challenging it becomes. In
my opinion, we should start preparing for the following year as early
as September. As December approaches it's easy to get caught up in
Christmas preparations, the year-end party and trying to conclude
projects before year-end.
Yet preparing for the following year is crucial. If you start the New
Year without adequate planning already in place, you may end up wasting
a lot of energy in the first quarter trying to establish yourself. If
you are well prepared you can close the year with a sense of
satisfaction, and ensure that you and your team are ready to hit the
ground running in the New Year.
While many entrepreneurs will be glad to bid farewell to 2010, there
are others, like Sirdar, who are able to look back on the year with a
certain amount of satisfaction, and to look forward to the New Year. I
believe that 2011 will be a good year for entrepreneurs who have built
solid foundations in 2010, who have prepared and planned for 2011, and
who are realistic about their expectations. If 2010 was about caution
and recklessness, I believe that 2011 will be about enthusiasm for what
the future holds.
As CEO of Sirdar South Africa, I am fortunate to be surrounded by a
wonderful team who share Sirdar's vision. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank them for the immense value they bring to our
organization throughout the year. I would also like to thank our
clients, who have supported us and trusted in the power of the
governance process.
Let’s look forward to even greater successes in 2011!
Best regards
Brian Barensche
